From Silver Frame to Sarajevo: Supporting Young Voices in Film and Environmental Awareness

This summer, Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung continued its long-standing support for dialogue, and social awareness through culture, in collaboration with the Silver Frame Film Festival and its follow-up initiative, the Silver Frame Film Residency. Together, these two events bridged communities, generations, and creative disciplines, showing how culture can become a driver of empathy, reflection, and positive change.

Silver Frame Film Festival: Culture, Community, and Climate

From 14–17 July 2025, the communities of Srebrenica and Bratunac hosted the second edition of the Silver Frame Film Festival, organized by Admon Film and supported by Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung. Over four days, audiences enjoyed a rich program of screenings, workshops, and discussions that placed strong emphasis on environmental storytelling, identity, and resilience.

The festival opened with Flow, the Oscar-winning animated film by Gints Zilbalodis, setting the tone for a program that explored the interconnectedness between humanity and nature. In total, the festival presented 7 feature-length and more than 35 short films, including regional premieres, student works, and independent productions.

Beyond screenings, the festival also featured a Film Residency program for young filmmakers from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Montenegro, and Croatia, supported by FES. The residency offered participants the opportunity to work collaboratively on short films addressing climate change, environmental protection, and community life. Workshops, masterclasses, and creative sessions allowed participants to translate abstract issues into human stories, reinforcing the idea that art can be a powerful instrument of awareness and change.

From Srebrenica to Sarajevo: Nurturing New Voices

Building on the momentum of the festival, the Silver Frame Film Residency continued in August during the Sarajevo Film Festival. Hosted at the Sarajevo Youth Theater, this follow-up event brought together the residency participants, their mentors, and a wider audience for a public presentation and discussion.

The opening remarks were delivered by Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung program managers Selma Šehović and Saša Vasić, who underscored the Foundation’s commitment to supporting young creators and using culture as a medium to strengthen communities and raise awareness of pressing social and environmental challenges.

The session included a Q&A with young filmmakers and their mentors, offering insights into their creative processes and the social topics that inspire their work. Through dialogue, the event highlighted the value of mentorship and regional cooperation in cultivating a new generation of socially conscious filmmakers.

Culture as a Bridge

For Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung, engaging with cultural initiatives such as Silver Frame is  an investment in community building and civic engagement. By supporting both the festival and the residency, FES contributes to creating spaces where creativity meets responsibility, where young people can imagine, question, and contribute to the public conversation on the environment, identity, and the future.

These initiatives remind us that film is not only entertainment, but also a bridge between people, generations, and ideas. Through storytelling, reflection, and shared experiences, we can build understanding, empathy, and commitment to a more sustainable and just world.
