Western Balkans Study Visit to Berlin
The program started with a visit to the headquarters of the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung (FES), where the delegation had the privilege of meeting Helene Kortlaender, the Director of the FES Eastern Europe Department. In a collaborative conversation, they explored strategies to support pro-democratic and pro-European voices within the Western Balkans. The discussion underscored the role of social and democratic values in driving positive change within the region.
The day continued with a conversation with Rasha Nasr, a Member of Parliament in Germany. Ms. Nasr is actively engaged in addressing migration, labor migration, and labor rights issues. The exchange of best practices and experiences among the young politicians was both insightful and inspiring. The dialogue highlighted the urgency of addressing migration as a priority topic for the Western Balkans.
Afterward, we also visited Humboldt University, where the delegation engaged in a thought-provoking discussion with Bernd Kasparek. This conversation focused on migration politics, rights, and the treatment of refugees within the European Union. The group exchanged views on the migrant and refugee situation in the Western Balkans, gaining a deeper understanding of these complexities.
The study visit concluded with a significant meeting at the Federal Foreign Office of Germany, where the delegation met with Valeska Esch. This meeting provided an opportunity to discuss the Berlin Process and the crucial role of regional cooperation within it. The discussions also revolved around the future expectations within the accession process. The participants emphasized the importance of bilateral and multilateral relations, anticipating fruitful collaborations as part of the upcoming edition of the Civil Society Forum in Tirana.
With this visit, FES SOE reaffirms our unwavering support for young politicians from the Western Balkans. They serve as key interlocutors in challenging the political status quo and driving true democratic changes for a better region and a better Europe. This journey to Berlin was not just a trip but a powerful testament to the potential of collaborative efforts in shaping a brighter future for all.
The visit of these young Balkan politicians to Berlin is a shining example of the positive impact that international exchanges and discussions can have on the political landscape. It reaffirms the importance of fostering pro-democratic values, addressing critical issues like migration and labor rights, and promoting regional cooperation for a better Europe.
