Progressive Leadership Program 2019

In 2019, the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung organized another rendition of the annual Progressive Leadership Program. Twenty-four young progressive activists and civil society representatives from eight countries of the Balkan region (Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Kosovo, Albania, Slovenia and Croatia) gathered between June and November in Belgrade, Budva and Zagreb to discuss problems that they are faced with and how young people can become agents of social change within their respective communities.

Within three workshops during the PLP 2019, participants practiced different modes and instruments of evidence-based policymaking, effective advocacy for policy change and leadership skills. Specifically, participants were trained how to best communicate progressive policies to the general public and different stakeholders within selected areas. During the program, young progressive activists and civil society representatives had the opportunity to meet and discuss the current political situation in the Balkans and the EU with guest speakers from regional politics, academia and civil society alike.

The program introduced a new dimension in this year’s workshops by bringing together not only youth members of progressive parties, but also civil society representatives and young activists. Their cooperation and discussion outcomes proved that trust-building among party representatives and civil society representatives is certainly worth fostering.

The Progressive Leadership Program will be continued in 2020, and the FES is looking forward to another year of working with active and progressive young people from throughout the region.
