Investigative Film Festival: Sofia

The Investigative Film Festival Skopje is on tour and its first stop was Sofia on the 6th of March under the title #GoingDigital. The Investigative Film Festival Skopje is an initiative of the Investigative Journalism and Analysis Platform Macedonia, PINA. It aims to explore the current world of innovative possibilities and how those relate to the future of journalism.

The festival was created as a way to explore keeping up with the rapidly advancing technology. The notion that newsrooms have to balance between quality journalism and the pressure to use click-baits to attract readers, resulted in a festival program dedicated to investigative journalism and media trends. It hosts various debates, workshops, invites different speakers and focuses on most up-to-date topics in the ever-evolving world of media.

Partnering with the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung offices, for this year the instalation moved to Sofia. The festival featured a dynamic discussion around the battle with digital misinformation and propaganda. It was followed by the screening  of the Netflix original documentary „The Great Hack“.

From award-winning filmmakers, the movie explores the depths and darkness of data exploitation, with astounding access to the personal journeys of key players on different sides of the Cambridge Analytica/Facebook data scandal. The multifaceted consequences of the illicit harvesting of personal data had deep political impact on events such as the 2016 US presidential elections and Brexit.
